Collinsville, IL - On March 21, 2012 at 6:30am Cahokia Mounds is hosting a fair weatherrise observance of called Spring Equinox at Woodhenge to commemorate 30 years as a knowledge base Heritage Site. The observance will be the culmination of a Spring Equinox fete that will include inherent American ceremonies, a reconstructed Woodhenge and overnight camping. The festival will focus on celebrating the future, honoring the past and educating the public approximately the rituals, ceremonies and traditions of Native Americans in the Midwestern region, emphasizing the importance of the sun to maintain life.
For the native Mississippians that inhabited Cahokia Mounds, the Spring Equinox equal the start of the planting season and signified the beginning of a new year.
Their survival depended on the position of sun. Tasks, detrimental to their existence, had to be completed on a specific schedule. Based on the position of the sun, Woodhenge was apply to gage seasonal changes. It was their calendar.
