This is because your students are far more likely to share opinions with their peers if they are not reading the same information. However, if you do read things that are similar to their experiences, just make sure that you change a word or two to make it different.This is not to say that you should just read the same book or newspaper article that they are, but instead make sure that you are reading something that focuses on a true life experience. For example, if you were reading about someone who went through cancer, then you should find some quotes that are related to the topic and use those quotes. Then you can give a short description of the person and make it so that it would be believable. Just make sure that you choose a topic that is worth relating to and avoid general topics.If you do c hoose a specific topic, then you should focus on the students themselves. You should use words that they would use if they were in their shoes to write about.
