Vox Pops 2
We just cant be without it
Notes for teachers
This option goes with the Vox Pops 2 audio file. This has a number of contrasting speakers
responding to two questions:
1. What couldnt the world live without?
2. What couldnt you live without?
These questions were put to native speakers on the streets of Bristol, a city in the South West of
England. Their responses provide small bites of authentic verbalise language. There is a transcript
of the audio file at the support of this resource. In the classroom, this resource could be used in many
ways. below ar some possibilities.

Before listening



Students could first be introduced to the questions. This is an fortune to revise question
forms, especially more complex ones, like these, involving both negatives and modals.
Paired discussion of the questions, taking turns to be interviewer and interviewee, might
elicit still useful vocabulary and ideas.

During listening




During a first listening, students could be asked to lay which items or ideas argon
mentioned by the speakers. There is a true/ irrational activity provided to support this. These are
true: bed, caffeine, car, chocolate, email, family, football, friends, labradoodles, mobile
phone, money, oxygen, police, sport, sunlight, television, water and wine.



The red herrings
are: boat, dreams, doctors, fast food, jokes and music. NB: A labradoodle is a crossbred or
cross dog created by crossing the Labrador Retriever and the Standard or Miniature
Poodle.
In a second listening, students could be asked to identify what each of the sextuplet speakers
mentions and their reasons (if any) for choosing it. You could extend this by asking which of
the speakers gives the best answer, and why.

After listening



Students could be invited to say which opinions are closest to their own. This could lead into
freer discussion if students are confident enough.
