Mae Carol Jemison was born on October 17, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama, the youngest of three children of Charlie Jemison, a maintenance supervisor for a charity organization, and Dorothy (Green) Jemison, an elementary school teacher of English and Math.[1] When Jemison was 3 years old, the family moved to Chicago, Illinois to take advantage of better educational opportunities. By the time she entered kindergarten in 1961 she knew how to read, and she had already decided to be a scientist.
As a child growing up, Jemison wise(p) to make connections to the world by studying nature. She remembers being further to spend hours in the library, reading about astronomy and some other informations. Jemison especially liked to read books about space give-up the ghost and novels of science fiction. She was also a big fan of the science fiction television program Star Trek. The shows black female officer, Lieutenant Unhurt, was her particular front-runner.
Jamison always believed that one day she, too, would travel in space, although at that time, there were no black or female astronauts.[2]
Jemison told a Super perception magazine writer that, in sixth grade, two of her favorite books were A Wrinkle in Time and Arm of the sea star by author Madeline LEngle (1918--). Those books stand out, Jemison said, because they had women scientists and heroines.
In 1968, at age twelve, Jemison had a disturbing experience. Near her predominantly African American neighborhood civil rights demonstrations were being held prior to a major political event. Seeking to prevent disorder, the Chicago city manager sent in the National Guard. As Jemison watched the guardsmen march by means of the streets carrying rifles, she felt both frightened and defiant.
