It was believed that a social breakdown syndrome would devel op inchronically mentally ill persons who were institutionalized. Thecharacteristics of this syndrome were submission to authority, withdrawal, lackof initiative, and excessive dependence on the institution.While deinstitutionalization was kind-hearted in its primary logic, theactual execution of the concept has been greatly undermined by the lack of goodcommunity alternatives. These individuals are often separated fromtheir families and all alone on the heartrending street. These homelessschizophrenics stay away from social structures such as community healthtreatment centers. Since they start a new life of liberty they often stoptaking their medications, become psychotic and out of place, and start to liveon the street. Since the schizophrenics are deinstitutionalized they are throwninto a intact new world of independence. Since their brain functions differentthan the usual human macrocosm they cant cope with the problems of life.
