The Road to War Between the States

The Ameri fag end Civil War, spanning the years of 1861-1865, was fought primarily over 2 key come ons; slavery and states rights. Though examples of conflict concerning both of these issues can be seen as early as before the underframe of the Constitution, there were several key events in the mid-1800s that contributed to the exacerbation of the negative Northern and grey sentiments. These events would culminate with succession of the southeastwardern Confederate States and lead the nation into the bloodiest battle in her memoir to date, the Civil War.
The Northwest Ordinance of 1789 was the first major decree to address the issue of slavery in future regions. This edict set the precedent of the join States expanding by creation of refreshed states instead of expansion of existing ones. It also, however, banned slavery in the territories north of the Ohio River, which would mean that as these new states were admitted to the legal jointure, the South would piecemeal lose their pro-slavery footing in Congress. At the time the Union was balanced equally between slave and non-slave states, a mental disorder of the balance meant the chance of losing their power to quell Northern anti-slavery legislation.



This issue would continue to grow, and become one of the primary reasons for the cessation of the South; if there were to lose their position in Congress and thereof their right to own slaves; their economy might well collapse. This was non an issue for the Northerners, as slavery was mostly a clean-living issue for them; their economy was based far more on industry than the plantations in the agricultural South.
The Missouri Compromise of 1820, outlaw slavery in the Louisiana Territory above the collimate 36°30 north was, aside from the Constitutional provision for a ban of the international slave trade in 1807, the next major step in Americas slave-related legislation.
