Although I was skeptical to start William Cronons novel, Changes in the Land, the defy was genuinely well written and intriguing. Similar to the class packet boat about the Columbian Exchange, this novel explores the initial contact that Europeans had with the States through an ecological point of view. Rather than focus on the relationship between the Native Americans and the Europeans themselves, the novel explores what it was like for Europeans to set down a world drastically different than their own. Trying to compute what the initial contact was like for the Europeans is nearly impossible to me. We lie in in a world filled with city skyscrapers, miles and miles of highway, planes, trains, cars, and an implausible amount of technology. Yet, this piece do me wonder how our actions as a species has been affecting the world in which we forego. To think that just a few hundred years ago America hadnt even been mapped yet is fascinating to me. In respect to the long time of the earth, it has taken man beings almost no time to tapdance the resources of our world for our own personal gain. The descriptions Cronon uses of the incredible flocks of birds and schools of fish leave my mind imagining how incredible it mustve been to see America forrader corrupted individuals had their way with the land.
To me this piece speaks of a world we no longer know, and I almost envy the Europeans for being commensurate to experience and appreciate the new world and all of its inhabitants. Although it made me slightly upset that I cannot experience the same terrific nature the Europeans did, I did enjoy reading about it. I also find Cronons approach to describing the history very unique. In all the years of history I ready taken throughout junior high and high school, I have never discussed anything but the interactions between kinds. Cronon makes many sound points as he explains that ecosystems have been altered by human activity. I found it interesting though that he considers how human activity changes the...
