Byzantine Art

Byzantine art style had many characteristics that set it asunder from other time periods. Artists broadly used gold toss for backgrounds and halos of holy figures; they portrayed their subjects as flat with a mostly stoic expression; and their perception of depth, if they tried to represent it, was passing off. Although innovators of this time were very limited in the means they were competent to break off from this style, artists like Giotto were able to make a few steps toward a more Renaissance feel.

Without removeting excessively outside of the box, he was able to create masterpieces that would change the way painting was done from that point forward. For example, his “Crucifix” piece in the Santa Maria Novella in Florence added weight to the body of Christ, something that his master, Cimabue, was neer able to achieve. Also, unlike the elongated figure in Cimabue’s version, Giotto began to understand proportions of the human figure more correctly. No long-acting in the crucifix piece is the stretched out body, but one with a more life-like representation of proportions.



Despite all of his revolutions international from Byzantine style, he was able to stay within the limits ripe enough in order to not upset the presentation of the church in any significant way. One of his study works in the Bardi Chapel at Santa Croce in Florence shows how he was able to transform art in that era. The scene render is the biography of St. Francis of Assisi and Giotto is able to depict the same story in a way that had never been done before. He uses emotion during the death of St. Francis by showing gestures and other Franciscan Monks gorgerin his feet. He also has a few figures faced away from the audience, which was also revolutionary and brings the fresco to our level.
