The Role of Formal Grammar Teaching on

A b s t r a c t
 
This paper is a review of views and research into the spot of formal grammar teaching in second speech erudition (SLA). It shows that research findings concerning formal grammar teaching (formfoc aimd instruction, instruction) have provided us with advantageously strong evidence that this type of instruction can benefactor acquisition, e.g. in
accelerating it, in raising consciousness, and in increasing accuracy. Experts outside SLA education have also shown support for this style of teaching. However, there argon still questions to be answered before most if not either experts in the area accept it. Nonetheless, the paper suggests that these findings have provided us with great insights into our students
learning when we are trying to interfere (to use Newmarks term, Newmark, 1966) with the process. These insights should give us (teachers) better unclerstanding of what we are trying to do, when to do it and scientifically justify why we do it.

In our group discussion in Adelaide last year, we discussed a lot of issues regarding how to improve our Indonesian language teaching.

consideration.
